Introduced in 1969 and marketed from 1970, the Porsche 914 was the result of a collaboration between Porsche and Volkswagen. At the time, Volkswagen was looking for a replacement for the Karmann-Ghia, while Porsche wanted to offer an entry-level model under the 911. The joint project resulted in a car that was very different from traditional Porsche production: a lightweight, mid-engined sports car, an architecture hitherto reserved for competition cars. This configuration provides excellent weight distribution and gives the 914 particularly well-balanced handling.<\/p>\n
The most sought-after version is the 914 2.0, introduced in 1973. Unlike the 1.7- and 1.8-liter versions, which came directly from the Volkswagen engine bank, the 2.0’s engine benefits from a specific preparation developed by Porsche. It’s a 1,971 cm\u00b3 air-cooled four-cylinder with Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection, developing 100 hp at 5,000 rpm and around 160 Nm of torque. This engine, recognizable by its specific cylinder heads with inclined spark plugs and larger valves, offers significantly higher performance. Combined with a 901-type 5-speed manual gearbox, it enables the 914 2.0 to reach around 190 km\/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km\/h in just over 9 seconds – very respectable figures for a car weighing less than a ton.<\/p>\n
The 914 is designed to be light and efficient. Its monocoque chassis, low driving position and removable Targa roof make it as pleasant on the road as it is on twisty roads. The suspension is based on torsion bars at the front and coil springs at the rear, with four disc brakes, guaranteeing very healthy handling and precise steering. Thanks to its mid-mounted engine and short wheelbase, the 914 boasted remarkable agility, often praised by the specialist press of the day.<\/p>\n
The example presented is a Porsche 914 2.0 first registered in May 1973 and delivered new in Belgium, making it an original European car. It has had only three owners since its inception. Its second owner, who was the head of Porsche Belgium, undertook a complete frame-off restoration, stripping the car bare and rebuilding it to the highest standards. The body was restored to its original color, while the interior was completely redone. Mechanically, the cylinder heads have been overhauled, the cardan shafts recently replaced, and the car is fitted with a self-locking differential, further enhancing driveability and driving pleasure. Extremely well maintained, the car is now in excellent condition, ready to take to the road with the light, sporty character for which the 914 2.0 is renowned.<\/p>\n
