The BMW E21 320/6 is part of the first generation of the 3 Series, launched by BMW in 1975 to succeed the famous 02 series (such as the 2002). The E21 marks a decisive step in the brand’s history: it’s the beginning of a lineage that would become iconic in the compact sports sedan segment. The E21 retains BMW’s beloved rear-wheel drive architecture and introduces stylistic and ergonomic elements that would become hallmarks of future 3 Series, such as the dashboard slightly oriented towards the driver, an innovation at the time.
In 1977, BMW introduced the 320/6 version, replacing the previous 320 equipped with a four-cylinder engine. The “/6” designates the adoption of an inline six-cylinder engine, a configuration synonymous with smoothness and mechanical nobility at BMW. This engine, coded M20B20, has a displacement of 2.0 liters, develops 122 horsepower at 6000 rpm and delivers about 170 Nm of torque. It is fed by a Solex 4A1 twin-barrel carburetor. This all-aluminum engine represents a significant advance in BMW engineering, designed to fit into compact models without sacrificing performance or driving balance.
The 320/6 retains the E21 structure, with MacPherson strut front suspension and a rigid rear axle with trailing arms. The brakes are disc at the front and drum at the rear. Several gearbox configurations were offered, including a 4 or 5-speed manual, as well as an automatic transmission. Thanks to its balance, precise handling, and linear engine, the 320/6 offered a very rewarding driving experience for its time, without falling into exuberance.
This version was positioned in the range as a more refined and performant alternative to the four-cylinder models, without reaching the sporty heights of the 323i, which had a fuel-injected six-cylinder engine. The 320/6 thus helped to broaden BMW’s customer base by offering a well-built, enjoyable to drive, and relatively accessible car.
Production of the E21 320/6 continued until 1982, before being replaced by the E30 in 1983. This transition marked the passage to a new, even more sophisticated generation. Today, the 320/6 is a model sought after by fans of youngtimers and authentic mechanics. Its carbureted engine, typical 70s design, and importance in the history of the 3 Series make it an endearing and emblematic model of an era when mechanical simplicity still met the pure pleasure of driving.
