The 1979 Citroën 2CV AZKA belongs to the last great lineage of the mythical “Deuche”, that of the 2CV6. At that time, the 2CV was no longer the rustic car of its beginnings, but a symbol of freedom, a lifestyle apart in an increasingly standardized automotive world. The AZKA version represented the top of the 2CV range, the technical and aesthetic culmination of a model launched more than thirty years earlier.
In the late 1970s, Citroën sought to keep its popular little car alive, despite the arrival of more modern models such as the Dyane and Visa. The 2CV6 AZKA is the answer to this challenge: a modernized 2CV, but faithful to its original spirit. Externally, it retained its inimitable shape, rounded fenders, round headlamps and canvas soft top, but was more fully equipped and finished than its predecessors.
Under the hood, the 2CV AZKA carries the 602 cm³ air-cooled, flat-twin engine from the Dyane 6. This little engine develops 29 hp at 5,750 rpm, enabling it to reach around 115 km/h on flat roads. The four-speed gearbox is fully synchronized, offering a smoother ride than the 2CVs of previous decades. Despite its modest power output, the car remains lively and surprisingly agile, thanks in no small part to its featherweight of 600 kg and supple suspension that swallows potholes and rough roads without flinching.
The AZKA’s interior, though spartan compared with contemporary cars, marks a step forward. There are more comfortable seats, better soundproofing and sometimes even a rear defroster or retractable seatbelts – a luxury for a 2CV. The simple but functional dashboard features the characteristic central speedometer, and the gearshift control retains its famous “umbrella stem”.
Produced at Citroën’s Levallois and Mangualde plants in Portugal, the 1979 2CV AZKA represents the model’s maturity. It embodies the end of an era when the car remained synonymous with freedom and modesty, far from ostentatious comfort. This version also marks the end of a cycle: it was one of the last before the 2CV became a legend in the 1980s, with special series such as the Charleston.
The 1979 2CV6 AZKA is thus a perfect summary of what the 2CV has always been: simple, enduring, joyful and profoundly human. It didn’t set out to impress, but to accompany – and perhaps that’s why it has become a veritable myth far beyond its time.
Completely restored to like-new condition, this 2CV benefited from a complete rebuild, from chassis to body. Interior, exterior, hoods, doors, fenders… everything has been replaced or refurbished with the utmost care.
Mechanically impeccable: cylinder heads, pistons and carburettor are new, and the car has been converted to unleaded. It has few kilometers since restoration. Tires and paintwork are also new. An extensive photo file and numerous invoices testify to the quality and seriousness of the work carried out.
An exceptional, uncompromising 2CV, ready to hit the road or join a fine collection.
