The Mercedes 300 SEL 3.5 saw the light of day at the end of the 1960s, when the star-spangled marque was seeking to broaden its upmarket offering by combining luxury, comfort and more modern motorization. Introduced in 1969, it belongs to the W109 generation, the long, luxurious version of the W108 series. The special feature of this version was its 3.5-liter V8 engine, a light-alloy block that developed around 200 hp. This was an important development, since until then Mercedes’ large sedans had relied on in-line six-cylinder engines, which were more flexible but less powerful.

The 300 SEL 3.5 brought a new dimension to the range, combining interior refinement, with high-quality woodwork and leather, with performance that rivaled that of other prestigious European sedans. It easily reached 200 km/h and accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just over 9 seconds, making it a fast and enduring tourer. The air suspension, already familiar from the 300 SEL 6.3, remained an asset in terms of comfort and roadholding.

It remained in production until 1972, when it was replaced by the new generation W116, the first to officially bear the name “S-Class”. Today, the 300 SEL 3.5 occupies a special place in Mercedes history: it embodies the transition to the modern era of compact, high-performance V8 engines, in a format that still retains the classic elegance of the sedans of the 1960s. It’s a model appreciated by enthusiasts for its balance between classicism and innovation.

The example shown, registered on May 9, 1972, was produced for the French market and delivered in “beige sable métallisé” and “brun tabac” for the roof, while the upholstery is in brown cloth. Interesting options include air conditioning and athermic glazing. In original condition, it was previously repainted and has benefited from recent work.
